NEP 2020: Can it reform education in India?

Every day we have been witnessing a lot of shortcomings in the traditional methods of education based on the fast-paced growth in the technology and world around us. Hence, to cope with the rising changes and to make future generations ready for advanced opportunities, NEP 2020 was introduced.

NEP 2020 can reform education in India in the following ways-

Multidisciplinary Approach-

The national education policy 2020 has introduced a multidisciplinary method of education. In this, the students have the flexibility to enroll in any course in any field. There is no bifurcation of subjects such as science, commerce, or arts. In this, a student can join any course irrespective of their core subject as a major or minor.

The online methods of learning have made it possible for students to study multiple courses and programs at the same time. For example, a student from an engineering course can join a drama course in another college. This enhances students’ specialization and helps them offer unique capabilities in various fields.

Academic Bank of Credits-

The introduction of the academic bank of credits allows the students to earn and transfer credits to any branch or institute they want. It is a digital storage where credits are stored for every student. They can use it for any course they want.

Further, the students have the flexibility of quitting any course at any time between the second to the last year of the course. They will be given the degree or certificate based on the number of years completed in it. This will allow the students to change the course if it is not suitable for them. Further, it will count the years of education the student has completed in any course.

Advanced Infrastructure-

The NEP 2020 is focused on integrating technology into education. It is aimed towards implementing advanced technologies in the institutes to offer the best possible educational experience to students in all fields.

It encourages the institutes to have good classrooms with advanced facilities that will enable the students to gain knowledge and skills in a better way. Further, the implementation of advanced technologies can help colleges to offer advanced courses to students.

It enables better lab equipment, experienced teachers, and enhanced libraries for ensuring students’ access to good educational facilities that will help them to work on projects, assignments, practices, and others.

New Evaluation System-

The NEP 2020 is focused on bringing a transformation in the ways of evaluating students. Traditionally, the students were evaluated for their performance in exams and scored accordingly. This encouraged memorization and rote-based learning.

In the new educational approach, the student is evaluated by 360 degrees. Apart from their exam performance, the student is also assessed for other activities such as extra-curricular, classroom interaction, projects, professionalism, communication skills, and others. This will help in the overall development of the students.

The NEP 2020 system aims to train the teachers at frequent intervals to ensure that they are ready to offer the highest form of educational experience to the students. It will help them grow their skills such that enable overall development of the students all all aspects of society.

Remote Education-

In the NEP 2020 method of education, the government bodies and educational bodies are focused on increasing the number of students receiving advanced education in our country and thereby increasing the literacy of the country. This can be made possible with the help of remote learning opportunities for students offered by institutes.

Remote learning allows students to enroll in any course from any college and gain a degree or certificate on passing the exam. They must only have access to a smartphone and an internet connection. It will help them learn new skills, gain knowledge, and work on projects, internships, and assignments.

Focus on Extra-curricular Activities-

The NEP 2020 policy is majorly focused on encouraging students to participate in extra-curricular activities apart from the classroom. They want the students to learn from life experiences and hands-on activities rather than just classroom learning.

They have also introduced vocational courses in the institutes and primary education will be offered in the mother tongue or local language of the region.

New Education system-

The NEP 2020 is giving major emphasis on the primary education of the students as that is the age for the development of the brain. It has changed the 10+2 system to the 5+3+3+4 system. Further, NEP 2020 encourages improving the pedagogy of teaching and wants to train teachers at frequent intervals. It aims to introduce coding from the 6th grade in schools.

Implementing top Universities-

The government is planning to bring the top foreign universities in India and allow them to set up campuses here. The main aim of this initiative is to increase the number of good colleges in the country and offer top quality education to the students. It will help the students to get international education and degrees for that.

Vocational Education-

The NEP 2020 is planning to introduce vocational education in different institutes. The students well skilled in a particular technology or field. In the traditional way, vocational education was considered as something that would be a lower class job or business.

This way, any student can enroll themselves in vocational courses. They help the students to gain industry experience in their area of interest even before completing the degree. Further, they get to work with experts in the field and build a network.

Conclusion-

The system aims to bring major changes to make learning student-centered rather than teacher-centered.
